Welcome to Go West Young Men. We’re in the midst of getting ready for Dirk and Paul’s big adventure, so stay tuned and feel free to make a comment or ask a question.
It’s almost the end of March and the trip is set to start on May 2. It’s approaching so quickly!
We will be translating the site into German as well so stay tuned for that…
Good to hear you both are still following your intention! I’d love to join you. Too bad I don’t have a horse!
Hi everybody, thanx for wishing the guys a good trip. I am Elli, the German representative – I will translate all the information that they will sent to Jane. Hopefully, we get some photographs of the start of the tour on Sunday. Some friends are taking pics, unfortunately I cannot be there! *sigh*
Congrats and good luck boys! I hope they are ready for the black flies, mosquitoes and rainy weather here in Northern Ontario! Wishing you both well!

Hi, this is Mel, Dirk and Paul, I wish you all the best and a whole lot of luck on your trip, but I have a question: If you guys have to use the washroom, how do you wipe? Did you bring a lot of toilet paper or are you using leaves? Or are you dragging your butts on the ground like dogs? Please let me know asap. Thanx
Hey Mel,
I happen to know that Dirk wanted to take toiletpaper – biodegradable of course! Paul didn´t want to and I don´t know whether they took some or not. Sorry, I cannot ask them anymore!
Dear Jane Kennedy, yeah, they are well aware of the blackflies and mosquitoes – but hey, they wanted it that way. Maybe they will be covered with enough dirt then and the blood suckers can´t get through anymore!
I was thrilled to talk with Paul and Dirk this morning as they left their first camping spot. What an interesting night they had…rain and thunderstorms but they were smiling and ready to hit the road. What an interesting trip they will have. I look forward to following their trek across this wonderful country of ours. What an adventure! Happy trails to you both!
Hi Wendy, thank you for letting us know! So they have survived their first night!
I too am curious, but not about how they do their ‘personal’ business… I am curious as to what goes with dandelions, how are they preparing these succulent morsels Mother Earth is providing them? Have they found anything else to eat? What I am asking is ‘what are the day-to-day details of their existence while following their adventure?’ An incredible experience like this should be shared more often don’t you think?
Hi Flora, great that you are so interested! I know that they have studied edible plants and they have a pot to cook roots and other things like some beans they took with them. Soon there will be berries and other fruit. They will be reporting soon, sending our friend Jane informations to put on here on the website. Just stay tuned and you will know.

Habe heute euren Zeitungsartikel gelesen.

Hello people. I was just speaking with Dirk and they are in Espanola, about two hours west of Sudbury. It has been an early spring here in Ontario, but on Saturday it snowed on Dirk and Paul. It has not been warm. They found refuge at a horse farm where they slept in the barn with the horses. All had a good rest. They are making excellent progress, sometimes doing 60-70 kms a day. Both horses and riders are in great shape.
They are taking the Old Webbwood Road and expect to be at their friend Hans’ place for a couple of days. Everyone can have a good rest!
They have met some great, generous people along the way and so far, their spirits are still very enthusiastic!!
Let us know if you see them and keep the comments coming!

Hallo “Holzmann-Verweigerer”,
Wahnsinn, was habt Ihr Euch denn da vorgenommen? Was sagt denn “Horsti” dazu?
Just looked through the photo gallery, very nice, lots of nature, I love it! On page 2 picture 17 Dirk drinking a beer, sleeping in a barn instead of outside and now visiting his friend Hans for a few days….I guess we can make a couple of exceptions since it is so cold here.
I hope the guys are all well and the weather will probably get nicer soon, too. Is Paul a vegetarian too?
Hi Mel,
Nice to back your blog, I find it again for about a month, now I have bookmarked it.
